INER’s research is organized across six departments. Each department addresses a core dimension of Northern Europe’s economic future and contributes to an integrated understanding of competitiveness, institutional capacity and strategic resilience.
Artificial Intelligence & Innovation
The Department of Artificial Intelligence & Innovation examines how AI, automation and data-driven systems transform industrial production, maritime value chains, logistics, energy infrastructure and public governance. Its research focuses on industrial AI, applied digitalization, AI strategy, technological sovereignty and the practical deployment of intelligent systems in complex economic environments.

Foreign Trade & Geoeconomics
The Department of Foreign Trade & Geoeconomics examines global value chains, export structures, strategic dependencies and the changing architecture of international economic power. Its work focuses on Northern Europe’s position in a world shaped by trade conflicts, industrial policy, technological rivalry and geopolitical fragmentation.

European Economic Law
The Department of European Economic Law analyzes the legal foundations of European integration, supranational governance and economic regulation. Its work focuses on EU law, EUR-Lex, European economic law, competition, digital regulation, the AI Act and the legal conditions under which innovation, industrial transformation and transatlantic cooperation unfold.

Logistics & Infrastructure
The Department of Logistics & Infrastructure analyzes the systems that enable economic movement: ports, transport corridors, energy networks, hydrogen infrastructure, e-fuels, digital infrastructure and critical supply routes. Its research connects industrial competitiveness with the physical and digital foundations of economic resilience.

The Department of Maritime Affairs studies the maritime economy as a strategic foundation of trade, industrial capacity and geopolitical resilience. Security & Defence Economics
The Department of Security & Defence Economics studies the economic foundations of resilience, deterrence and strategic autonomy.
